Broadview Addition
Broadview, SA

Select images to enlarge in new window.

The addition of living areas to an existing bungalow provided the opportunity for the new design to incorporate many environmentally sustainable features including a strawbale wall.

The striking roof form maximises solar access to the north, with high level windows calculated to allow winter sun to warm and block summer sun shading internal areas.

The addition was open to the public for Solar House Day, an initiative to encourage better design and education to the public.

Other sustainable design elements incorporated in the design include:

Highly insulated walls using rendered strawbale walls and batt insulation to timber framed walls.

Washing machine grey water is diverted for garden irrigation (SA Water approved).
Rainwater collected and pumped for use inside.
Low-E glazed sliding windows used for greater thermal performance and cross flow ventilation.

01 Lightweight wall construction used corrugated zincalume & EcoPly external cladding.
02 Northern light is captured through the high level windows (shaded in summer).
03 Rainwater is pumped to the addition. Tanks are hidden by external strawbale walls.
04 Timber frame walls during construction.
05 Timber framed windows with Low-E glazing.
06 Ceiling fans & high level louvre windows open for cross flow ventilation.
