Clients Tim and Lee bought a large bush block, in a bushfire prone area, adjacent to a conservation park.
To meet the client's request for a “house that is cool in summer, warm in winter and a joy to live in”, strawbale was used for the external walls for insulation.
The owners had collected many recycled materials such as windows, doors and large timber posts. These items were incorporated during the design stage of the project.
To optimise space, yet have the least possible impact on the site, a two storey design was the preferred solution. |

Orientation of the main entertainment area was to the north, with bedrooms on the cooler southern side. The stairwell acts as an airlock, so that warmth/coolth can be maintained in the lower level when required.
The owners are self sufficient for all power and water, with photovoltaic panels mounted on an adjacent shed. By installing composting toilets the use of water has been minimised and nearby tanks store rainwater collected from the roof.
