Loxton Residence
Riverland, SA

In the land of the orange, this home was designed to accomodate the riverland climate of hot days and cold nights.

The living areas are orientated to the north, to take advantage of the solar access with solar-passive design and the distant views across the valley.

Using strawbale, the external walls insulate against the extreme temperature variables, stabilising the internal spaces.

Masonry internal walls surround the living areas, providing thermal mass to further moderate temperatures.

A light coloured roofing was chosen to help reflect the hot sun and large overhangs to shade the external walls.

The external wall colour is unique to the sand colour used to achieve a pale-pink hue that will slowly lighten.

During the owner builder process of construction, the owners used recycled windows, ornate floor tiling and exposed timber lintels to create a hand-crafted and comfortable home.

02 The eastern strawbale wall is stacked and tied down.
03 First coat lime render is applied to the external strawbale walls.
04 Internal block walls provide thermal mass to the living spaces.
05 Northern e-glazed windows are sized for solar access yet frame the distant view.
06 The wide overhangs provide protection from the hot riverland climate.
