Many sustainable systems are used within this handcrafted owner built home to maximise the performace of the home.

Lime rendered strawbale external walls, recycled timber framing and radially sawn timber cladding create a comfortable aesthetic to this residence to relate to the surrounding environment.

Thermally the home functions for the owners aided by double glazed timber framed windows, solar-passive design, orientation of the building and highly insulated walls and ceiling.

Electricity, drinking water and sewer disposal are managed onsite by photovoltaic solar panels, rainwater harvesting and a composting toilet respectively.

Incorporating a loft area within the roof maximised the space available, with the added benifit of minimising the overall footprint of the design.

01 Timber is used extensively; ceiling lining, handrails, window frames and floor finish.
02 The north elevation with dormer windows and verandah.
03 Dormer windows allow additional natural light and headroom to the upper floor.
04 The residence, separate carport and vista beyond.
05 External strawbale wall before lime render is applied.
06 Solar panels and a large rainwater tank were installed before construction of the roof was completed.
07 The clients added their own touches; mosaic tiling splashback.
08 The extended ridge to the roof helps protect the western facing strawbale wall.
